Mother was born in 1931, the oldest daughter of Alice Loynes and Walker Jones. Her birth name was Alice Loynes; it was subsequently changed to Doshia Greene in recognition of her grand aunts Amelia Evans Greene, and Doshia Evans Kirkland.
She was educated at an exclusive private school for colored girls known as Mather Academy; founded by missionaries from New England in the wake of the American Civil War.
